Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) is a dense, short grass that provides texture and colour in your garden. It makes a great hiding places for bugs and small wildlife and is the host plant to a number of butterflies including a few Skippers.
Little bluestem will form a clump and send up flower stems up to three feet high. In late summer the plant mass has a blue/purple hue and the delicate, feather-like seeds move in with the wind.
Once established, Little Bluestem is extremely drought tolerant and will slowly spread through runners and seeds, but it is not competitive and will die out quickly if it is crowded.
Little Bluestem is a garden workhorse that will add mass to support flowers, provide a beautiful border plant, and produce grass and stems for mulch. It is a warm-season grower that send roots down up to eight feet deep.
